Special Correspondent

Complies with SIAM’s ‘voluntary labelling programme.’

NEW DELHI: Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) on Wednesday announced fuel economy details of all its models, becoming the first automobile company to comply with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers’ (SIAM) ‘voluntary labelling programme’ where auto companies would disclose fuel efficiency details by March 2009.

Of MSIL’s 14 models and variants, its only diesel car Swift (both sedan and hatchback) clocked a mileage of 21 km a litre, while Swift’s petrol variants gave 15.9 km a litre. All the mileage results were obtained under test conditions approved by three government approved agencies.

Topping the list in the petrol segment is the newly launched compact car A Star (19.6 km), followed by Alto (18.1 km), Zen Estilo (17.3 km), Wagon R (17 km), Omni (16.9 km) and M800 (16.1 km). Similarly, its sedan SX4 gave a mileage of 15 km a litre, while in the case of Versa it was 12.7 km a litre, Gypsy 11.3 km a litre and sports utility vehicle Grand Vitara 11.2 km a litre.

“It is a proactive measure undertaken by us in customer interest. The fuel economy figures obtained in tests by premier automobile research institutions emphasise Maruti Suzuki’s overall leadership in making highly fuel-efficient cars. It would enable customers to make an informed choice when purchasing a car in the market,” said Maruti Managing Director and CEO Shinzo Nakanishi.

The ‘fuel consumption consumer information’ labels would be displayed alongside the car models in all the showrooms, Mr. Shinzo Nakanishi said.
