Efforts on to achieve cent per cent literacy

KARUR: Efforts are under way to make Karur district cent per cent literate. Part of the efforts is introduction of the 100-day literacy programme for women and girls, according to District Collector J. Umamaheswari.

Participating at the anniversary celebrations of the Nerur Government Higher Secondary School coupled with the launch of the 100-day literacy programme for girls, Dr. Umamaheswari said that the State government was implementing a lot of programmes for the welfare of the students and to improve the standard of education.

Besides the regular schools, the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, Adult and Continuing Education and other agencies were aiding the cause of education.

The 100-day literacy programme was aimed in particular at improving the rural women, she said.

It was in that direction that the programme was being launched at the Nerur Government Higher Secondary School for the Karur Panchayat Union.

The programme envisaged educating women above the age of 15 through activity based learning. She exhorted the women employed under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme to enroll for the literacy programme and get benefited.

On the request for improving the amenities in the school Dr. Umamaheswari assured the teachers and students that she would look into the matter and take remedial steps.

Chief Education Officer Kandasamy, District Education Officer Ramasamy, District Elementary Education Officer Govindarajulu, School Headmaster K. Krishnamurthy, Nerur Agneeswrar Temple Worshippers Association office-bearers and others participated in the function.
