CHENNAI: Usha Krishna, a member of the Crafts Council of India for over three decades, has been elected president of the World Crafts Council (WCC), an international NGO engaged in the crafts sector. The decision was announced at a recent general assembly meeting of the UNESCO-affiliated WCC held in Hangzhou, China. Ms. Krishna, who lives in Chennai, is the WCC’s first Indian chief and takes over from Celina Maria Rodriguez of Chile. Over her four-year term as president, she will coordinate crafts activities in the five WCC regions — Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, South America and North America. Ms. Krishna has listed the priorities in her new role as advocacy of the cause of crafts and craftspersons at the levels of government agencies, policy-makers and the business community. She will also work to ensure that the traditional skill and the artisans are mainstreamed.
