Letters to the Editor
This refers to Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer article on statesmanship (December 31). Though there are impatient voices advocating a war with Pakistan for harbouring, training and stimulating terrorists on Indian soil, there is also a caution against such action. We have fought four wars with Pakistan successfully but could not solve the Kashmir problem. Except suffering a financial burden and the sacrifices of our jawans, India gained nothing from the wars with Pakistan and there is no likelihood of this situation changing for the better. Hence the question of going to war with Pakistan should not arise. Should we not pause to think whether we should maintain a huge army and go on increasing our expenditure on defence preparedness by burdening taxpayers? N. R. Sathyamurty, Bangalore
