>>The Editorial “Looking ahead” (January 1, 2009) had a phrase “the die will roll”, leading to queries. The OED says that “roll” refers to “a throw of a die or dice.” As far as usage is concerned, historically, dice is the plural of die, but in modern standard English, dice is both the singular and the plural. The singular die (rather than dice) is uncommon.

>>The accompanying photograph in an item “UCO Bank reduces equity capital” (“Snapshots — Business” page, December 31, 2008) was without a caption. The person in the picture is Mr. S.K. Goel, Chairman and Managing Director, UCO Bank.
