dated January 2, 1959: Military junta in Cuba

General Fulgencio Batista, the Cuban ruler, on January 1 fled the war-torn island, by air. He announced he was resigning the Presidency “to save the country from further bloodshed.” A three-man military junta headed by General Eulogio Cantillo, a prominent member of the General Staff, has taken over the Government of the country. His departure follows the big battle with Fidel Castro’s rebels who are attempting to take the city of Santa Clara and split the island.
