Vardhan seeks Delhi Govt. drivers for Blueline buses

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: With the Blueline buses taking a toll of over 120 lives in 2008, Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan has demanded a number of steps for improving the transport system and ensuring that people do not lose their lives in similar fashion on the city roads in the New Year.

To begin with, Dr. Vardhan has suggested that the Delhi Government immediately get its own drivers to operate the Blueline buses under the kilometre scheme and bring an end to the madness on the roads. “The conductors should be of the private operations and the government drivers should be issued instructions that if they are caught driving rashly in connivance with the conductors and are found violating the traffic rules, then they would be sent to jail,” he added.

“Complain to police”

Dr. Vardhan said the drivers should also be told that on any kind of persuasion or coercion by the bus operator they should immediately complain to the Delhi police. And if these conditions are not acceptable to the operators, action should be initiated against them, he said.

Dr. Vardhan has also suggested that the Delhi Government persuade Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata to also operate the fleet of buses that has been supplied by them to Delhi. The group should be given full autonomy in this work, he said.

Calling for speeding up the process of running private buses through cooperatives, the Delhi BJP president said the bus operators should be invited to operate on the 17 identified routes and the Government should itself appoint the drivers for these buses and ensure that their pay and allowances are higher than the general bus drivers’ so that they are not tempted to break any rules.

Dr. Vardhan also suggested more Metro lines for Delhi, particularly two corridors along the Ring Road and the Outer Ring Road, so that the traffic on these roads is reduced to one-third of the present volume.

Also, he has suggested that Delhi Metro be allowed to start its own link bus service for providing better connectivity to the metro railway stations.
