AIIMS without renal transplant co-ordinator

Bindu Shajan Perappadan

‘This post is a mandatory requirement in all hospitals for registration of transplants’

The department has no process in place yet to find a replacement

‘Request for extension up to 62 years has not been agreed to’

NEW DELHI: The Department of Nephrology at the country’s premier All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here will be ushering in the New Year minus a transplant co-ordinator -- the single isolated post that has been vacated with the person in charge retiring on December 31. The department also has no process in place yet to find a replacement.

The department offers treatment to patients with end-stage renal disease and does more than 120 kidney transplants every year which is the highest for any institution. “We see about 450 patient per month who require a great amount of counselling and co-ordination and the transplant co-ordinator has been doing this job very effectively for nearly a decade now,” said the Head of Nephrology Department, Dr. S. C. Tiwari, in his letter to the Institute director in September.

In his letter, he also noted that the retirement of the transplant co-ordinator would create a vacuum and that the transplant work will be jeopardised.

Dr. Tiwari strongly recommended that the transplant co-ordinator Justin A. Masih be given a year’s extension in the Department of Nephrology.

“In response to my application, I was intimated that my request for extension up to 62 years has not been agreed to without assigning any reason. However, as per guidelines of the Government I still deserve extension up to 62 years within the rules,” said Mr. Masih.

“It is also pertinent to mention here that this post is a mandatory requirement in all hospitals for registration of transplant and I am the only one such officer who is holding this single isolated post as per intimation given by the Head of Department and Chairperson of the Hospital Management Board. These authorities have repeatedly requested for extension of my post. I have also come to know that there is no recruitment process in the pipeline which will take care of this activity after my retirement,” said Mr. Masih.

The renal transplant co-ordinator is the key link between the various departments that are involved in renal transplantation.
