Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday night urged Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram to rush more troops to the State in the wake of serial blasts and to thwart possible strike by insurgent outfits. Two-day visitMr. Chidambaram arrived here on a two-day visit about an hour after the serial blasts that rocked the city on the New Year Day. Briefs on blastsMr. Gogoi called on Mr. Chidambaram at the Raj Bhavan here and briefed him on the situation in the wake of serial blasts and the measures taken by the State government acting upon Union government’s intelligence inputs. Emerging from the meeting, Mr. Gogoi told journalists that he would make a formal request to the Union Home Minister at Friday’s scheduled meeting of the Unified Command. The Chief Minster heads the three-tier command structure of the Army, the Assam police and Central paramilitary forces. Dinner cancelledSources said the official dinner scheduled to be hosted by Mr. Gogoi in honour of Mr. Chidambaram was cancelled in the wake of the blasts. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will arrive here on Friday for a night halt en route to Shillong, where he is scheduled to inaugurate the Indian Science Congress. President Pratibha Patil will attend the valedictory session of the meet on January 5.
