Complete distribution of flood relief before January 5, Collectors told

CHENNAI: The State government has directed District Collectors of flood-hit areas to complete the distribution of compensation to the affected farmers before January 5.

The Agriculture Department, which had assessed the crop damage, had sent a proposal to the government recommending that Rs 372.71 crore be distributed as relief to the affected farmers. Of this, Rs 200 crore had already been distributed and the balance would be disbursed before January 5 as per the government’s directive.

Standing paddy crop in about 4.58 lakh hectare had suffered more than 50 per cent damage and the affected farmers would get a compensation of Rs 7,500 per hectare. Apart from paddy, millets in 67,000 hectare, pulses in 4,000 hectares, cotton in 35,800 hectare, sugarcane in 10,800 hectare suffered damage owing to floods. The compensation would be Rs 4,000 per hectare in case of irrigated crops, Rs 2,000 per hectare for rain-fed crops and Rs 6,000 per hectare for perennial crops.

Apart from the cash compensation, farmers would get insurance money if they had insured their crops.

About 8.58 lakh farmers had been enrolled in the current year under crop insurance and Rs 15.5 crore had been collected as premium amount from them.

According to a department official, as on date 4.15 lakh hectare had been covered under samba in delta districts as against the normal coverage of 3.78 lakh hectare and 1.03 lakh hectare under late samba compared to the normal coverage of 1.77 lakh hectare.
