Student representatives also to be in welfare cell Scholarships, tuition fee reimbursement to the economically backward from next academic year HYDERABAD: With the government subsidising almost the entire higher education of the students belonging to poorer sections at a huge cost of Rs. 2,000 crore from this year, it has decided to constitute a State-level Student Welfare Cell (SWC) to ensure foolproof reimbursement of tuition fee and payment of scholarships in Andhra Pradesh. The SWC, which will be the State’s first monitoring mechanism for scholarships and fee re-imbursements, will be constituted with officials, non-officials and student representatives. In effect, the amounts will be released only through the SWC based on the application of students from April 1. Eligible students will be allotted a code number at the time of admission in the educational institution to enable the SWC to monitor money given to the student in coordination with the respective welfare department. This was decided at a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy here on Friday. Speaking to reporters later, K.C . Reddy, chairman, AP State Council of Higher Education, announced that Dr. Reddy had also agreed to release an additional Rs. 626 crore to meet the current year’s commitments. Following a wider coverage of students, especially those of the backward classes, the burden had reached a high of Rs. 1,914 crore as against Rs. 1,314 crore provided in the budget. Prof. Reddy said it was decided to extend scholarships and tuition fee reimbursement to economically backward classes too from next academic year.
