Court permits TNPSC to hold Group I interviews

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has permitted the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission to proceed with the interview for Group I Services and complete the same. The final selection should not be effected till further orders of the court.

Justice P.Jyothimani passed the interim direction on a batch of petitions in which the validity of the written examinations was challenged. The prayer included grant of an ad interim stay of the oral test scheduled from December 26 for the selected candidates in the Group I Examination 2006-07.

As regards the preliminary examinations, the court had already passed a detailed order in August this year with certain directions. The petitioners’ grievance appeared to be that the said directions had not been complied with, especially the condition relating to the constitution of an expert committee and in that view of the matter it should be construed that the earlier directions had not been properly carried out.

Counsel for the TNPSC submitted that as per the court’s earlier directions, out of the 125 candidates, 25 persons were found eligible for the oral test and the expert committee found that out of 25 whose main answer papers were valued, only two were qualified for oral interview. Referring to the prospectus, he submitted that no candidate had a right to seek for revaluation.

In his order, the judge said the questions as to whether the expert committee had been constituted and findings had been published or not were all to be decided only after the Commission filed counter affidavit. In the meantime, when serious allegations were made against the examinations conducted by the constitutional body, the interests of candidates were also to be protected.

In view of the same, the judge said he was giving an interim direction. He also directed the Commission to file counter affidavit by January 6. The matter has been posted for January 9.
