Letters to the Editor
The article “India may need them at home” (Op-ed, Dec. 31), says “About 20 per cent of the population is Catholic in Kerala.” This is a misrepresentation. As per the 2001 Census, Christians constitute 19 per cent of Kerala’s population. The author seems to have ignored the presence of Orthodox, Protestant and other denominations. Among the 60 lakh Christians in the State, only 33 lakh (55 per cent) are Catholics (Syro-Malabar + Latin Catholic + Malankara ‘Reeth’). The followers of the Orthodox Church number 16 lakh (27 per cent) and of Protestant churches 11 lakh (Mar Thoma + CSI + others). Jindow Joseph, Bangalore
