Sanitation workers on strike

VISAKHAPATNAM: Sanitation workers owing allegiance to the GVMC Employees Union, affiliated to CITU, have gone on strike affecting sanitation in several parts of the city. Zone I and VI, comprising the panchayats merged in the corporation and Gajuwaka, are the worst affected where around 90 per cent workers are on strike. The corporation has a total of about 5,200 workers. About 70 per cent workers did not attend in Zone V, it was learnt.

The union president P. Venkata Reddy said Subhram and Janachaitanya and DWCUA workers and those in Gajuwaka and merged areas had been on strike since December 30. He said though the corporation had resolved to pay wages according to GO 1289 at its general body meeting on December 29 its extension to Subhram and Janachaitnya workers had been questioned leading to the strike. He said around 4,000 workers were on strike affecting sanitation in four of the six zones in the city. Talks were held with Mayor Pulusu Janardhana Rao, Commissioner B. Sridhar and other officials on Friday afternoon but no settlement was reached.
