PAMPA: Leaving no chance for subversive elements, the State government has made arrangements for scanning all vehicles entering Pampa, at the foothills of Sabarimala, during the Makaravilakku festival.

The Police Department on Saturday installed two units of an under-vehicle surveillance system (UVSS) at Chalakkayam, 4 km away from here, for scanning every vehicle crossing the tollgate there. The move follows reported terrorist threats to certain places of worship in different parts of the country, including Sabarimala.

Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Company Limited is the security solutions provider. Suresh Namboodiri, spokesman of the company, said this was the first UVSS to be installed in the State.

The system is installed at a cost of Rs.38 lakh with Keltron as its facilitator. The company will install another UVSS at the Cantonment Gate of the Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram soon.

The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) authorities attached to State police inspected the surveillance system in the evening to ensure its effectiveness. A BDDS team will manage the system during the Sabarimala festival period.

UVSS mainly comprises a line-scan camera, three auxiliary cameras and a control system with terminal. It scans the underside of vehicles moving up to a speed of 30 kmph and produce high quality images in real time.

Police sources said that the system would be operational from Sunday morning and all vehicles would be diverted through the UVSS-installed two-lane tollgate.
