Nagercoil: ‘National tourism and cultural festival’ will be conducted for five days from January 4 at Kanyakumari. District Tourism Officer Hari Radhakrishnan said that the festival would commence with an awareness rally from Pazhathottam to Gandhi Memorial. Decorated elephants and horses would take part in the procession. The festival was being organised to attract more tourists to the Lands’ End (Kanyakumari). Cultural programmes and folk art forms such as Theyyam, Kalari, Nyandi Melam, Karagattam, Magudattam, Poikkal Kuthirai, Singri melam and Silambam would be organised during the festival days. As many as 400 folk artistes from five southern districts of Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Kerala had been invited to participate in the festival. Light music events by orchestras from around the State and classical dance performances would also take place. A multimedia exhibition involving various departments, including Agriculture, Horticulture, Health, Forests and Fisheries, and self-help groups would also be organised within the premises of Tourism Department. Twenty stalls with exhibits highlighting the achievements of the various government departments would be put up. A national-level seminar on ‘Tourism and national integration’ would be conducted on January 6 at Hotel Singar International for tourism students and professors. Students would present papers on tourism. Elocution and essay competitions for school and college students would also be conducted. Atypical of such a festival, volleyball and kabaddi matches and swimming competitions would be held among the public and fisherfolk in Kanyakumari district, Mr. Radhakrishnan added.
