VIGILANT: The Chennai Trade Centre in Nandambakkam has been made out of bounds for the public and its staff are allowed only after proper identification. TAMBARAM: Security has been tightened at the Chennai Trade Centre in Nandambakkam since Thursday, as part of the arrangements being taken by the police in connection with the visit of President Prathiba Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. The facility has been made out of bounds for the general public and even staff employed there are permitted inside only on production of identity cards. They are also subjected to a thorough frisking by the policemen. Police will begin videographing all workers who are currently working at the centre, a senior police officer said. The police had a meeting with the representatives of the Confederation of Indian Industry, the organiser of the event. Armed policemen and those in plainclothes have been deployed in different parts of the Trade Centre since Thursday evening. Personnel from the Chennai City and Suburban Police Commissionerates, along with other senior officials of the Tamil Nadu police conducted joint inspections on Friday morning to supervise the security arrangements that need to be put in place. Sniffer dogs have also been stationed at the Centre. Police said no event or exhibition was permitted since preliminary arrangements for the VIP visit began. Officials said in view of the e-mail threat to railway establishments received about a fortnight ago, they were leaving no stone unturned to ensure that foolproof security arrangements were in place. They were expecting personnel from the Special Protection Group and other police officials from the Centre to conduct their inspection at the function spot a couple of days later. While Dr. Manmohan Singh would inaugurate the convention on January 8, Ms.Patil would deliver the valedictory address the next day and also give away Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards during the course of the three-day event that commences on January 7.
