SALEM: Going to school is an unpleasant experience for children studying in the Paavadi Corporation Primary School in Ward 41 here. The school lacks proper drinking water supply provisions and the administration building of the school is in a dilapidated state.
The school premise, which also has four anganwadi centres, has turned into a field for open defection. Lack of a compound wall has led to this unfortunate situation, parents point out. The compound wall of the school got damaged a few years ago. Teachers and parents made repeated appeals to the Salem Corporation, which maintains the school, to construct a compound wall to prevent entry of outsiders into the premises. But the pleas fell on deaf ears. “The number of admissions in the school has come down drastically in the last four years as parents are not willing to send their children to study in a filthy environment,” teachers say. The schools, which once had over 700 children, now has 316 children on its rolls. Besides, about 100 children come to the four anganwadi centres. Anti-social elements have also started using the school premises for their activities. This makes it even more unpleasant for the children, teachers say. “We have taken this issue to the notice of the Mayor, and senior officials on several occasions. But no measures emerged so far,” parents say.
