37 members of Mavalli Gram Panchayat resign

Correspondent

Karwar: Thirty-seven members of the Mavalli Gram Panchayat in Bhatkal taluk resigned on Saturday to protest against the alleged dictatorial attitude of the gram panchayat president, Sudha Keregadde.

The members also locked the panchayat building as a mark of protest.

Earlier, the members convened a meeting and handed over their resignation letters to the Bhatkal Assistant Commissioner. The vice-president of the gram panchayat is among those who resigned. The gram panchayat has 39 members. A few days ago, 37 members of the panchayat submitted a memorandum to the Assistant Commissioner. They had also served a notice for moving a no-confidence motion against Ms. Keregadde. But Ms. Keregadde moved court and obtained a stay against convening any meeting of the gram panchayat for three weeks.

Upset by this development, the 37 members submitted their resignation and locked panchayat building on Saturday.
