Chillargi bridge to be opened next month

Staff Correspondent

BIDAR: The Chillargi bridge, across the Manjra at Chillargi village in Bidar taluk, will be inaugurated by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa next month, district in-charge and Minister for Animal Husbandry Revu Naik Belamagi has said.

Speaking to presspersons after inspecting the work on Friday, Mr. Belamagi said that except for some minor work everything was ready. The Minister gave an assurance that all the remaining work would be completed in a fortnight.

Mr. Belamagi said that Andhra Pradesh, which shares a border with Bidar district, had constructed a reservoir to supply water to Hyderabad and Secunderabad drawing water from the Manjra. He added that the Andhra Pradesh Government had given permission to construct a bridge at Chillargi village. An agreement was signed between the two States in 1984. Officials had prepared an estimation of Rs. 5.3 crore for the work. However, due to various reasons, Mr. Belamagi said, the cost of the works escalated to Rs. 19.5 crore.

The bridge will connect Bidar district to Narayankhed in Andhra Pradesh. Earlier, people had to use a coracle to cross the Manjra.

Executive Engineer of Public Works Department, Bidar Manohaur Mandollli accompanied the Minister to the spot. Spokesperson of district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party Babu Wali was present.
