Ban on plastics, display of posters in Puducherry coming

Staff Reporter

“Representations to ban plastic items poured in after recent flood”

from July 1

Ban on display of posters will be effective

from February 1

PUDUCHERRY: The government has decided to ban plastic items and display of posters in Puducherry.

While the ban on plastics will come into effect from July 1, the ban on posters will be effective from February 1.

Briefing reporters after a Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam said that the decision to ban plastic items such as carry bags and cups was taken following demands raised by several sections of people.

The government had received several representations to ban plastic items immediately after the recent flood, he said.

Several drainages and stormwater drains were clogged due to dumping of plastic.

A six-month time period was given to bring the ban into effect, only to create awareness of the hazards of plastics. It would also give time to make available alternative material for plastics in the market, Mr. Vaithilingam said.

The government decided to ban display of posters and hoardings as it was a threat to law and order.

Mr. Vaithilingam said that a report submitted by an expert committee on Anglo French Textiles would be made public on January 7. It would help to ascertain the view of the AFT workers before taking a decision.

The Chief Minister said that he had directed the Revenue Department to expedite the distribution of flood relief to affected persons.

Refuting criticism that relief measures had not reached several beneficiaries, Mr. Vaithilingam said it was politically motivated.
