NCP not to be part of UDF: Chennithala

Special Correspondent

‘Karunakaran’s remarks to be viewed positively’

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala has said the entry of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) into the United Democratic Front (UDF) is a closed chapter and his party is more focussed on mobilising the people against the unpopular Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule.

Mr. Chennithala, however, said the KPCC viewed veteran Congress leader K. Karunakaran’s criticism in a positive manner by energising the Opposition’s functioning. Mr. Karunakaran is the senior-most leader of the party and his opinions were valuable. “I am sure there would be no attempts on the part of the senior-most leader to bring down the Congress party’s image,” he said at a press conference soon after a joint meeting of the office-bearers of the KPCC, the Congress Legislature Party and DCC presidents here on Saturday.

The party was functioning in a united manner through which it had recovered its credibility among the people. The agitation programmes that the party had charted out were part of the attempts to improve its functioning in a manner acceptable to the UDF’s support base.

Collectorate siege

The KPCC took forward the party State conference decision to stage a Secretariat and Collectorate siege on January 20. The Collectorate blockade in Thrissur would be held on January 23 because of the ongoing festival in the district. The siege would focus on five major issues, including the State government’s failure to arrest the rise in prices, withdrawal of electricity-water tariffs and bus charge, failure to initiate effective inquiry into several cases of atrocities against women, deteriorating law and order situation, stagnation in the State’s development owing to the government’s failure to implement Central projects in a time-bound manner.

Mr. Chennithala said he would undertake a 24-day campaign across the 140 Assembly constituencies in the State, starting from Manjeswaram on February 8. The Yatra would focus on the anti-people policies of the State government and highlight the dangers of terrorism and communalism. Prior to the launch, workshop on “Challenges faced by Kerala” would be held in Kottayam, Idukki, Kollam, Malappuram, Pathanamthitta, Kalpetta and Alappuzha.
