Yeddyurappa to open Chalavadi meet today

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: With a view to articulating the problems of Chalavadis in the State, the first ever State-level conference of that community, a Scheduled Caste, has been organised in Shimoga on Sunday. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa will inaugurate the conference.

Minister for Women and Child Development P.M. Narendra Swamy told The Hindu that there were about 50 lakh people belonging to the community in the State. But they could not be organised because they were under different names across the country as well as the State.

Mr. Narendra Swamy, who belongs to Chalavadi caste, said that people belonging to all denominations of the community would attend it.

Minister for Energy K.S. Eshwarappa, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies H. Halappa and Subhash Bharani, Representative of the State in New Delhi, would attend the conference, he said.
