Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: The State government is upgrading 300 hospitals in the State and taking steps to ensure that the services offered meet Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS), Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy has said. More than 23 community health centres (CHCs) were being upgraded to the level of taluk hospitals. Close to 31 government hospitals and 96 primary health centres will be made CHCs, the Minister said here on Saturday. In-patient and 24-hour facilities will be introduced in 153 primary health centres, she said. The Kasaragod and Adoor taluk hospitals will become general hospitals and the Peroorkada Government Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram will be a district hospital, Ms. Sreemathy said. The recommendations of the standardisation committee appointed by the State government had been accepted. The upgrade of selected district, taluk, block and panchayat-level hospitals were being done as part of the exercise, she said. With this, the number of CHCs would go up to 231 from the present 115. Close to 115 CHCs had been brought under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and their modernisation was under progress, she said.
