SHIMLA: All higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh, including the tribal belts of Lahaul Spiti, Kinnaur and Pangi and Bharmaur areas of Chamba district, experienced a heavy snowfall on Saturday and icy wind conditions prevailed all over the State. Keylong, the district headquarters of Lahaul Spiti, was the coldest place at minus 8.9 degrees Celsius, said the weatherman. There were reports of heavy snowfall during the past 24 hours on the top peaks of Pangi and Bharmaur sub-divisions of Chamba. Kalpa, the tribal town of Kinnaur, was also reeling under cold wave conditions with the night temperature falling below zero. Although a mild snowfall was reported in Kinnaur, the temperature was minus 2.5 degrees. There were reports of heavy snowfall on the 13,500 feet high Rohtang Pass. Bhunter airport in Kullu district recorded a temperature of 3.6 degrees. The tourist resort of Manali also reeled under freezing winds. The temperature in Shimla was around 5 degrees and it wore a deserted look. Many tourists have left Shimla after the New Year celebrations and the locals preferred to stay indoors. The old Shimla residents were seen wearing long overcoats, mufflers and traditional hats. The weather office has predicted snowfall and rain in the next few days.
