‘It is to prevent closure of Kannada departments’

A Kannada meet to be held at Joida on January 16 and 17

BANGALORE: To prevent closure of Kannada departments in the universities outside Karnataka, the Kannada Development Authority (KDA) has decided to grant a scholarship of Rs. 20,000 a year to each student studying M.A. course in Kannada in those universities.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, KDA Chairman “Mukhyamantri” Chandru said 33 students had enrolled for the MA course in six universities outside the State. Six students had enrolled in the Dravida University at Kuppam in Andhra Pradesh, four in the University of Madras in Chennai, one in the University of Mumbai in Mumbai, 11 in the Government College at Kasaragod in Kerala and five in the University of Madurai in Madurai. Of the 33 students, 19 enrolled for the course in 2008-09, while the rest were studying M.A. final year. Most of the students were from north Karnataka. The authority would organise a function on January 9 at the Jnana Jyothi Auditorium here to present the scholarships to students, he said.

Mr. Chandru said that the authority would review the performance of students once in three months and continue the scholarship to them. The scholarship (Rs. 2,000) would be given for 10 months in an academic year, he said.

The Kannada departments in some of the universities were on the verge of closure owing to lack of students. Not a single student had enrolled for the PG course in Kannada in the Kannada departments of Akkalahote College in Maharashtra, R.J. College at Ghatkopper in Mumbai and the universities in north India, he said. A Kannada conference would be organised at Joida in Uttara Kannada on January 16 and 17. Writers and officials from various departments would be invited to the conference, he said.
