Government hostel inmates block highway

KARUR: Irate inmates of the government hostel for the Adi Dravidar girl students of the Government Arts College, Thanthonrimalai, here, blocked traffic on the Dindigul-Karur highway on Friday evening.

They alleged that the quality of the food served was bad, quantity was inadequate to cater to 55 students, basic amenities in the hostel were lacking and practically there was no proper sanitary facilities in the rented building that housed the hostel.

The students brought the cooking utensils with food left in them and placed them on the road. They alleged that there was no proper toilet facilities in the building, food was available on some days for only 20 or so persons, dinner itself was being prepared in the morning, inadequate drinking water supply, and general misadministration.

The inmates wanted better quality food, water, sanitary facilities and a new warden in place of the incumbent.

Tahsildar K. Ravichandran and other officials rushed to the scene, pacified the protestors and assured them that all their grievances would be looked into. With their grievances having been highlighted, the students ended their agitation that lasted more than half an hour.
