Bangalore: The Spastics Society of Karnataka, in association with the Autism Society of India and ABA India organised a video programme on “Applied Behaviour Analysis” (ABA) on Saturday at the Spastics Society’s building in Indiranagar. This branch of medical science deals with experimentally derived principles of behaviour to improve psychology. Smitha Awasthi, founder of ABA India and director of Autism Awareness and Action, coordinated the event. She is the first Board Certified Behaviour Analyst in India, and has spent 13 years working with autistic children. What is ABA? Based on B.F. Skinner’s Operant Conditioning, ABA looks at environmental influences on behaviour. It determines what factors are influencing behaviour and applies interventions to bring about positive changes in areas of deficit. According to the organisers, these behavioural modification procedures may be used to shape the behaviour of children and adults alike. An effective ABA programme blends discrete-trial procedures with natural environment training. ABA methods may be used in child-initiated instructional sequences (known as incidental teaching procedures) or self-management of behaviour.
