Car was involved in accident; one person died, three were injured

Thiruvananthapuram: The police on Saturday found two swords and some crude bombs in a Maruti Wagon R car which was involved in an accident near Mangalapuram on Friday night. One person, Biju alias Kochukuttan of Barton Hill Colony, was killed and three other car passengers were injured in the accident that occurred at 7.30 p.m.

Among those injured was alleged “gang leader” Goondukadu Shabu against whom the District Collector had issued a detention notice under the provisions of the Kerala Anti Social Activities (Prevention) Act. The others were Leon alias Alphonse, 31, and Shaiju, 31, both residents of Barton Hill.

Sub Inspector, Mangalapuram, V. Jayachandran, said the car was registered in the name of one Siad of Kowdiar. He said the vehicle was over speeding and it had rammed two vehicles before coming to rest on the side of the road. Shabu sustained a thigh injury in the accident. The police found Rs.17,000 and three mobile phones in the car.

Judicial custody

Mr. Jayachandran said the police had registered a case of violation of the Arms and Explosives Act against Shabu and other passengers. The driver of the car has been booked on the charge of rash and negligent driving. Judicial First Class Magistrate, Attingal, Anil Kumar, held court at the Medical College Hospital (where the injured were being treated) on Saturday and remanded them in judicial custody.

The police found some washed clothes inside the vehicle. The SI said the clothes were being forensically examined for blood stains. Shabu faced severe threat from rival gangs and police have posted an armed picket at the hospital.
