Sufficient quantity of fertilizers promised

Staff Correspondent

Davangere: Agriculture and Rural Development Minister S.A. Ravindranath has said that the State Government has given a bank guarantee of Rs. 400 crore to the Karnataka State Co-Operative Marketing Federation to purchase sufficient quantity of fertilizer so that there would be no scarcity in the coming season.

Inaugurating the ‘Janaspandana’ meeting at Mayakonda on Saturday, Mr. Ravindranath noted that it had asked the federation to purchase over 21 lakh metric tonnes of fertilizer.

He said that the Government had taken all measures to ensure that farmers would get all facilities, including supply of adequate fertilizer and quality seeds on time to carry on agricultural activities.

Mr. Ravindranath said that it had come to his notice that officers in some places were insisting the farmers to buy agricultural implements from certain shops and agencies to get subsidy. He said that officials should refrain from doing that and if they continued, disciplinary action would be initiated against them.

He said that if farmers use chemical fertilizers, the cost of production would increase. Instead, they should go in for natural farming and organic farming methods. He said that farmers were not using the chemical fertilizer in the past and the agriculture products were of high quality then.

There are 1.25 lakh families in the State of whom about 35 per cent were living below the poverty line.

The Government had issued over 80 lakh BPL cards so far and a person could get the card by declaring himself as poor in a stamp paper worth Rs. 20.

Mr. Ravindranath said that not much progress has been achieved in NREGS (National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme) in Davangere though an amount of Rs.22 crore had been released so far.
