Exquisite array of home decorations on show

Expo of handicrafts and handlooms will go on till January 11 in Puducherry

Spoilt for choice: Products on display at the exhibition of Poompuhar.

PUDUCHERRY: An exquisite collection of handicrafts and handlooms find place at an exhibition of Poompuhar, the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited. Unique pieces of handiwork of artisans from across the country, including metal paintings, lamps made of pure brass, Tanjore paintings made of real gold foil and furniture made of rose wood, come as additional attractions at the exhibition.

The exhibition cum sale, titled “Home Decorations,” consists of decoration handicrafts, handcrafted textiles and jewellery from various States. It was inaugurated on December 31 and would go on till January 11.

With different kinds of handicrafts available under one roof, the exhibition has an interesting array of handicrafts including varieties of brass lamps such as “Anna Vilakku,” branch lamp and hanging lamps.

“The brass lamps are made of pure brass. The shining on the lamp will remain and it is of good quality too. It is available in different designs and the cost starts from Rs. 100 to Rs. 2.80 lakh. The designs include for pooja and decorative purposes too. This is a special creation of Poompuhar,” said officials of the corporation.

Bronze icons, made of five metals, mainly comprising temple replicas of gods and goddesses are also on display. For painting lovers, Tanjore picture paintings done with real gold foil are available till Rs. one lakh. Thanjavur art plates made of brass, silver and copper can be given as gifts, they added.

Miniature paintings, show pieces in wood with intricate patterns, cut-glass works and flower vase with hand designs display workmanship at the exhibition. “The special attractions at the exhibition are rose wood jula, metal paintings and a branch lamp consisting of 32 different poses of Vinayagar. The metal paintings are new arrivals in Puducherry,” D. Rajendran, Manager-Exhibition of Poompuhar said. The metal paintings cost from nearly Rs. 400 to Rs. 9,500 and comes in patterns of wall hangings and wall clocks too.

The furniture made of rose wood with inlay patterns includes tables and dining table set. Single-piece wood carvings of gods, goddesses and non-religious patterns, soap stone carvings, saris, churidhar sets, toys for children, terracotta artefacts, leather and jute products and artificial jewellery are some of the other exhibits.

The exhibition is on at Vel Sokkanathan Thirumana Nilayam, Vallalar Street, Kamaraj Nagar from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
