dated January 5, 1959: Soviet rocket’s success

Russia’s cosmic rocket swept round the moon at 1.52 miles a second on January 4 and set out on its elliptical path around the sun to take its place as the first man-made planet. The signals it is sending out are being computed and Mr. Viktor Bazikin, director of Moscow’s Planetarium, said that the secrets of outer space being revealed will be shared with the rest of the world. He told an enthusiastic audience that Soviet scientists had achieved their object of getting a rocket to the vicinity of the moon, though they had never intended putting the rocket into the moon’s orbit.
