Build railway foot-overbridge

Railway foot-overbridge at the Gudur railway station, the need for which is long felt, seems to remain a dream. People are facing a lot of inconvenience at the railway station due to the absence of the bridge.

It seems that the railway department and the State Government through the Roads and Buildings department sanctioned amount for the purpose. But, the work is yet to be commenced. It is learnt that identifying the location for the construction is a major stumbling block for the project. The officials are requested to look into the matter and take necessary steps to ensure the construction of bridge.

Provide better catering

The hot beverages being sold at the outlets on the premises of railway stations are of poor quality and insipid taste. Recently, I travelled between Ongole and Vijayawada by a super-fast train and during my journey I depended on the railway stalls for coffee and tea at both stations.

Despite the high price (almost double that being charged by tea stalls outside), the stall keepers are not maintaining any quality.

The coffee was nothing but hot water and the taste of tea was no different.

I wonder whether the checking authorities taste the foodstuffs at least once a week. The authorities are requested to take steps to ensure supply of better quality of foodstuffs and beverages at the railway stations.

Land for SEZs

With regard to acquiring lands for the Special Economic Zones (SEZs), the State Government should follow the rule of law, which permits the Government to acquire lands only for public purpose. The Government can use its powers to acquire land for providing facilities like transport, irrigation, public health and education, but not to allocate the sites to private parties for the SEZs, which is purely a private affair. The SEZs may benefit their proprietors, but not the common man. The Government should understand that land is the major source of livelihood for majority population of the State, which is basically an agrarian society.

Moral education

After the ghastly acid attack on the engineering girl students at Warangal, the number of such incidents, including eve-teasing, are being reported from different corners of the State. It is indeed a serious matter and the Government and the managements of the educational institutions should take note of such threats.

In this context, one should realise that the encounter of the accused students is not the solution.

This incident highlighted the need for introducing moral education in schools and colleges to inculcate self-discipline among students to prevent them from resorting to violence. In addition, a total ban should be promulgated on the screening of sex, violence and obscenity in movies and television serials.
