Kui Samaj holds a meeting at Gadragaon near Chakapada State urged not to remove the word ‘Kui’ from ST list BERHAMPUR: The tribal organisation ‘Kui Samaj’ of Kandhamal district on Sunday expressed its moral support to the new Maoist outfit ‘M-2’ that has come up in the area. They also criticised the Maoist organisation led by Sabyasachi Panda operating in the area alleging it to be helping the exploiters of tribals. Presence of Maoists in Kandhamal district was a major point of discussion of a meeting of tribal organisation ‘Kui Samaj’ held at Gadragaon near Chakapada. Around 3,000 tribal delegates from all parts of Kandhamal district attended the meeting organised to discuss the future course of action of the organisation. The recent split in the Maoist organisation and formation of a new outfit ‘M-2’ in the area was discussed in detail. Speaking to The Hindu, the convenor of the coordination committee of Kui Samaj said the tribal delegates expressed their solidarity with the stance taken by the new Maoist outfit ‘M-2’, which had given a successful bandh call on Jan 3. He said the statements and activities of the Maoist group led by Sabyasachi had hurt the tribals as it was for unknown reasons helping exploitation and killing of tribals at hands of exploiters. The tribals at the meeting also blamed this group as the root cause behind all violence that happened in the recent past who according to them were used by vested interests to kill VHJP leaders at Jalaspata ashram on Aug 23. The moral support to ‘M-2’ by Kui Samaj may lead to volatile situation in Kandhamal district as it would enter into a clash for clout between the two naxal groups. The Kui Samaj also decided to show its strength of unity by fielding candidates in the coming elections. “We have decided to field candidates for three Assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat in Kandhamal district,” Mr Kanhar said. The tribals were too critical of a new organisation named Adivasi Harijan Surakhya Samity that had come up in Kandhamal district which has recently started making acrid remarks at Kui Samaj and its leaders. The Kui Samaj activists alleged that the organisation was formed with political motive to instigate and irritate tribals. They urged the organisation to refrain from making remarks against Kui Samaj. The Kui Samaj also urged the State government not to delete the word ‘Kui’ from the Scheduled Tribe list. The Orissa Scheduled Castes Welfare Advisory Board had recently recommended removal of Kui word from the ST list to avoid conflict between Kui speaking Kondh tribals and some non-tribals in Kandhamal district. The Kui Samaj wants themselves to be identified as Kui (Kondh).
