Some 35 e-governance projects in different stages of implementation

BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here on Sunday inaugurated Kalinga Park, a development centre of IT giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) at Infocity.

Although Orissa was a late starter in IT field, of late it emerged as hot destination due to favourable ICT (Information and Communication Technology) policy, Mr. Patnaik said here.

He said despite economic slowdown the State government remained cautious and was pursuing major financial correction programmes.

Education hub

Addressing the gathering, TCS Chief Executive Officer S. Ramadorai said Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri were fast acquiring status of education hub and TCS had been recruiting 1,200 to 13,000 engineering graduates and 100 general science graduates every year.

TCS Kalinga Park is the latest addition to the company’s Global Network Delivery Model (GNDM). The first unit of the facility with a capacity of 1,000 seats has been made operational in the first phase. Upon completion, the facility will have a total capacity of 7,000 seats.

“Tier II and Tier III cities have the potential to drive the next phase growth for the IT industry. Over 70 per cent campus hiring at TCS happens from Tier II and Tier III cities. The new campus at Bhubaneswar reiterates our commitment to the development of new centres of excellence, enhance the suitability of talent pool as well as drive inclusive economic growth,” Mr. Ramadorai said.

Speaking on the occasion Tata Steel Managing Director B. Muthuraman said TCS was another opportunity to participate in industrial progress of Orissa. Elaborating State’s roadmap in IT sector, State IT secretary P. K Mohapatra said Orissa ranked among 10 States with annual growth in export touching 34 per cent annually.

“By 2011, we want to touch export figure of $ 1 billion mark. Moreover, we are following fast-paced e-governance programme. Some 35 e-governance projects are now in different stages of implementation,” Mr. Mohapatra said.

He said plans were afoot to train one lakh youths in soft skills and prepare them for grabbing IT jobs.

Among others secretary of Planning Commission Subhas Pani, State IT minister Surya Narayan Patro and TCS Chief Operating Officer N Chandrasekaran were present.
