Prachanda plays down controversy

Prerana Marasini

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda), who is also the patron of the Pashupatinath Temple here, said on Sunday the appointment of Nepali priests should not be understood “as a way to remove the Indian priests”. However, Minister for Culture and State Restructuring Gopal Kirati said Nepal had a right to appoint priests.

Meanwhile, around a dozen caretakers of the temple were injured in an attack by the youth wing of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoists), the Young Communist League (YCL) on Sunday.

The caretakers were about to hold a press conference when the Maoists attacked them.

Dismissing the controversy as “making [a] mountain out of a mole hill”, Mr. Kirati said New Nepal needed New Pashupatinath. About the Court’s stay order, Mr .Kirati said, “We will accept the order.” However said: “There is less chance of reinstating the former priests”.
