Star attraction: Culture Minister M.A. Baby with actors Navya Nair and Meera Nandan at the 49th Kerala School Kalotsavam in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kozhikode district will host the Kerala School Kalotsavam in its golden jubilee year in 2010, Education Minister M.A. Baby announced here on Sunday. Talking to mediapersons, Mr. Baby said the 50th Kerala School Kalotsavam would be held from January 4 to 10, 2010. The Kalotsavam flag will be handed over to the Kozhikode Mayor and officials of the Education Department from the district at the closing ceremony of the 49th Kalotsavam on Monday. “The dates and venue of the next youth festival are being announced one year in advance to give the organisers the benefit of time. This will enable them to make arrangements and prepare well in advance,” he said. However, when asked whether the High School and Higher Secondary youth festivals would be jointly held, as this year, the Minister said this would be decided after another review meeting. Post-mortem“The pros and cons of this joint youth festival will be examined in detail. We will also discuss whether any more revisions have to be made in the festival manual regarding certain events, as requested by some people,” he said. Mr. Baby also announced the venues and dates of other school events to be conducted during the next academic year. The school athletic meet will be held in Pathanamthitta district from December 14 to 19 this year while the school science fair will be held in Thrissur from December 7 to 10. The special school youth festival will be held in Palakkad from January 12 to 14, 2010. AppealsAs on Sunday afternoon, an additional number of 1,447 students participated in the 49th School Kalotsavam by means of 374 appeals, Mr Baby said. “This had taken the total number of participants in this festival to 9,080,” he said. Referring to the issues that cropped up at the venue of the instrumental music competition, Mr. Baby said students participating in the School Kalotsavam should learn to compete with available facilities and adjust with limitations, if any. Kozhikode in leadKozhikode district continued to maintain its lead for the overall trophy of the youth festival, in both the High School and Higher Secondary categories at the end of 145 events. Some of the major competitions held on Sunday were light music, oriental violin, group dance, group song, ganamela, ‘Parijamuttu’ and Kathakali. Communal riots, poverty, mobile phone misuse and other contemporary issues were reflected in the performances of participants of the mono-act, an event that attracted crowds to the youth festival on Sunday. DiscordsHowever, arguments and confusions continued to mar the festival even on its penultimate day. Shifting of ‘Vattapattu’ competition venue from the Central Stadium to Thycaud Model School also caused considerable trouble for the participants. Actors Navya Nair and Meera Nandan visited the festival venue at the Putharikandom Maidanam on Sunday.
