‘No senior police officer visited the station after attack’ ‘Police have slapped very light charges against attackers’
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has sought stern action against those who had attacked the Kumarakom police station on New Year eve. In a letter to Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, released for publication here on Sunday, Mr. Chandy said the police had slapped only very light charges against the persons involved in the attack. Only four persons were arrested in connection with the incident despite the Home Minister’s statement that the government would initiate stern action against anyone attacking police stations, he said. Three injuredMr. Chandy, who had visited the police station on January 1, said he was distressed to note that no senior police officer had visited the station despite three police personnel getting injured in the incident. ‘Reluctant police’The police was also showing reluctance to arrest all those involved in the attack and the charges that have been brought up against those arrested were very light in nature. This, he said, would only result in the law enforcers coming under pressure when confronted with similar situations in future. The Opposition Leader asked the Home Minister to ensure that all the attackers were arrested and prosecuted on sterner provisions of the law. Inquiry soughtMr. Chandy also demanded an inquiry into the circumstances that led to the repeated attacks on the Kumarakom police station. Release of arrested persons and the trespass into the sub-inspector’s quarters to intimidate him should also be probed into, he added. If the people were to provide security to the police personnel who were supposed to provide protection to the life and property of the people, it would only lead the State to anarchy, Mr. Chandy said.
