Radar guns to check traffic violators at night

The equipment can take clear image of vehicles without any flash, says officer

High-capacity cranes that can lift heavy vehicles to be acquired

Traffic police are also planning to introduce e-enforcement

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Traffic Police will soon acquire compact and state-of-the-art speed detection equipment with night use capability to keep an eye on speed violators during night on the Capital’s roads.

“In the past the traffic police faced the handicap of not being able to prosecute speed violators during night. To overcome the difficulty, we have initiated the process of acquiring speed detection equipment with night use capability using infra red flash gun,” said a senior traffic police officer.

In the proposed system, speed detection will be automatic and data along with coloured digital images can be transmitted wirelessly to a remote enforcement station up to a kilometre down the road. Moreover, the equipment would be able to cover multiple lanes and not need an operator to aim at the vehicle. The equipment can take clear image of vehicles travelling at speed without any flash.

The police have already floated a tender in the international market to purchase a few radar guns this year. Each radar gun will cost several lakhs and be positioned at important location in the Capital. It will be the first instance of use of radar guns in India to check traffic violations during night. The equipment is in use in some Western countries now.

“With installation of radar guns, we are confident of checking road accidents that take place during night because of dangerous and drunken driving,” said the officer.

The police have also decided to acquire some high-capacity cranes that can lift heavy vehicles weighing up to 20 tonnes. “In accidents involving heavy vehicles it becomes difficult to clear the road quickly due to non-availability of high-capacity cranes. So we have decided to acquire them by the end of the year,” said the officer.

Besides, the traffic police are also introducing e-enforcement as part of their modernisation initiative. The traffic police officers will be provided with hand-held electronic devices for challaning traffic offenders on the spot. “The device will be capable of retrieving relevant data related to the violating vehicle or the driver from the data base of the traffic police. These devices are very handy and will save manpower, time and paper work,” said the officer.
