Preserve trees - Reader's Mail

This is with reference to the report “Avenue trees fringing stadium gone” in The Hindu, December 29. Felling trees in the name of widening of roads has become a routine affair in the city. Modern planners do not know how to preserve old trees and plant new ones. Trees are cut down without thinking of the far-reaching consequences. To destroy the environment is easy. How to preserve it is a question the rulers have not thought of seriously.

Saplings are planted only on paper, to hoodwink people. At this rate, the State may even see desertification. Should we allow that to occur?

Green belts must be preserved at all costs, more so for the future generation.

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation stopped bus services between East Fort and Trivikramangalam after private buses starred running on the route. The buses are crowded from East Fort to Thamalam, via Karamana and Poojappura. Since the Parayilkadavu bridge at Thamalam has been opened, the corporation should start circular services connecting Pappanamcode and East Fort, via Thamalam, Kunchalumoodu and Karamana. Residents of Thamalam, Sastrinagar and nearby places will find these helpful. Will the corporation take urgent action to start the services?

The decision of various fish workers’ organisations to offer assistance to the Navy by keeping a watch in the deep sea is commendable. The fishermen have firsthand knowledge of vessels on fishing expeditions.

They can easily identify suspect vessels and strangers.

Their help and cooperation is valuable and they should be encouraged. The sea is a strength and weakness in ensuring security. It has to be secured with the help of selfless people such as fishermen.
