Letters to the Editor
The article "A price for everything, and anything for a price" (Jan. 3) should serve as an eye-opener to nations supporting and cooperating with the Hamid Karzai government. If the situation is not controlled and reversed, the future of democracy in Afghanistan will be in peril. The Taliban may take over the country sooner than later. Thousands of lives lost by the U.S., its allies and Afghanistan, and millions of dollars spent on the rebuilding of Afghanistan will be rendered futile. One hopes the Obama administration will take note of the present situation in Afghanistan before committing more men and material to uphold the corrupt Karzai government. Comdt G.V. Mathew (retd.), Thiruvananthapuram The article made sad but familiar reading. If the corruption level in India does not come down soon, or at least stabilise at the existing level, the situation here will not be very different from Afghanistan. K.P.F. Solomon, Chennai
