Arrest laws

This refers to the editorial "Rationalising arrest laws" (Jan. 3). The amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure have made the arrest laws more humane and are distinctly laudable. But they should not have been passed in a hurry, as there are widespread complaints about the arrest and detention process across the country. Parliament should have discussed the amendments threadbare so that more loopholes in the CrPC could have been plugged.

C.P. Velayudhan Nair,

Thiruvananthapuram

***

The amendments seek to safeguard the people from unjustified arrests and needless police harassment. Arbitrary arrests affect the cordial relations between the people and the police. They also impose huge costs on prison administrations. The hallmark of a nation's civilisation indeed depends on the methods employed to enforce the criminal law, as the editorial sums up.

S. Janakiraman,

Coimbatore
