Staff Reporter

Thrissur: A recent bird survey conducted at kole fields in the district confirmed the presence of 36,351 water birds from 72 species.

Last year’s survey had recorded 30,618 birds from 69 species.

While there was an increase in the number of species such as Openbill stork, Darter and Painted stork, the survey indicated a decline in numbers of Tree duck, Tern and Jacana.

The avian monitoring conducted at Adatt, Tholoor, Enamavu, Palakkal, Pullazhi, Uppungal, Mulloor Kayal, Thommana and Elavalli was organised by the Kerala Forest Department, Forestry College and the NEST.
