BANGALORE: Former prime minister H. D. Deve Gowda on Monday ridiculed Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa’s decision not to file a defamation case against him with respect to his allegations against the Chief Minister pertaining to the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor Project. “Filing of any defamation case would have provided an opportunity to the Janata Dal (S) to produce all the evidence relating to fraud in the BMIC Project. It would also have given the right to the respondent to uncover the truth about the massive fraud and prove it in a court of law by calling witnesses including Mr. Yeddyurappa, BMIC promoter Ashok Kheny, and bureaucrats to testify. It is this fear that has forced Mr. Yeddyurappa to talk about ‘good relations’ with the Opposition,” Mr. Gowda remarked at a press conference in Bangalore. (On January 1 Mr. Yeddyurappa announced his decision not to file a defamation case against Mr. Gowda, describing it as his “new year gift” to the senior politician.” Terming this as a “priceless gift,” Mr. Gowda on Monday remarked that: “I do not have the strength to accept the Chief Minister’s gift.” He noted that if the defamation case is not filed, then the state government will be the only party before the Court regarding the BMIC row. But the state government is trying to clear all the hurdles for the BMIC, he said while reiterating his charges that Mr. Yeddyurappa in conspiracy with Mr. Kheny was trying to bury the Rs. 30,000-crore alleged fraud. He said: “the JD (S) has shown in by-election that it has people’s trust. The BJP’s win is attributed more to misuse of official machinery and illegitimate massive money power and due to certain elements in other Opposition parties for their narrow personal ends.” He alleging that Mr. Yeddyurappa was trying to make the cases against the BMIC before the Supreme Court infructuous. BOOKS: The JD (S) which recently brought out a book in English on the alleged fraud in the BMIC project as well as the alleged nexus between Mr. Kheny and Mr. Yeddyurappa has sent the copies of the book to Mr. Yeddyurappa, and prominent bureaucrats such as the chief secretary, Revenue Secretary and urban development principal secretary. Mr. Gowda said the Kannada versions of the book would be given to all the legislators in Karnataka soon. (EOM)
