News Analysis
* * “An investment made in the stocks covered by the benchmark index, Sensex, in January 2007 would be worth 54 per cent less now,” said the Editorial, “Traumatic Times” (January 5, 2009). It should have been January 2008. * * A report “Ezhimala Naval Academy is all set for inauguration” (Kerala, January 3, 2009, page 5) said Vice-Admiral Sunil K. Damle is the Commander-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command. He is the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command. Similarly, in a report “[Sankara Nethralaya] Hospital to spend Rs. 80 crore on its expansion programme” (Chennai city, January 5, 2009, page 2), Major General E.J. Kochekkan was referred to (in the text and photo caption) as the General Officer Commanding in Chief (Southern Command). He is the General Officer Commanding, ATNK & K [Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala] Area, Chennai. * * The tenth paragraph in a report “BJP to restart poll preparations” (January 4, 2009) was “Citing an example, one leader said: ‘In 1999, we had the National Conference in the NDA, but now that party has moved to the United Progressive Alliance. We can hardly go with the People’s Democratic Front.’” It is the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). * * The name of the IIT Kanpur Director is Prof. Sanjay Govind Dhande, and not Sanjay Kumar Panday as given in a PTI report “IIT student commits suicide” (January 4, 2009). * * The last paragraph of a report “We need a new generation of role models and teachers: PM” (January 4, 2009) mentioned [Dr.] Shanta, of the Cancer Research Institute, Chennai, to be in her 90s. She is 81. * * The accompanying Graphic News map in the lead story “Kilinochchi captured in devastating blow to LTTE” (January 3, 2009, page 1) once again incorrectly depicted the Indian Ocean. What was shown as the Indian Ocean should have been the Bay of Bengal. (In this column, on November 29, 2008, we pointed out that the standalone graphic (Graphic News, “Terror in Mumbai” page, November 28, 2008), titled “Bomb attacks in India in 2008”, had incorrectly depicted the major water bodies around India.)
