Photography exhibition

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: An exhibition of photographs captured by Shadi Ghardirian, an internationally acclaimed Iranian photographer, has been organised here by Tasveer from January 9.

“Being a woman in Iran is hard, and working as a woman photographer is even harder,” Shadi Ghadirian was once quoted as saying. She came into the limelight in the late 1990s with her “Qajar” series in which she examined the paradoxical position of women in Iran.

Ms. Ghardirian is one of Iran’s leading contemporary photographers, and her works have been exhibited and collected in museums and galleries across Europe and the U.S., a release said. She has also been featured in the print and electronic media, including the New York Times, Photography Now, The Daily Telegraph and BBC. Currently, Ms. Ghadirian works at the Museum of Photography in Tehran. Her work is intimately linked to her identity as a Muslim woman living in Iran. Nonetheless, her art also deals with issues relevant to women living in other parts of the world. She questions the role of women in society and explores ideas of censorship, religion, modernity, and the status of women. The exhibition will be open between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. till January 26 at Tasveer, Sua House, 26/1 Kasturba Cross Road.
