‘Urban design must complement Hampi site’

Staff Correspondent

HAMPI: Minja Yang, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) representative in India and architect Maria Angela Manzoni of Milano in Italy, were here to discuss with the elected representatives and officials of Hampi World Heritage Area Management Authority, about the need to chalk out urban design, street pattern and other related aspects to suit the world heritage site.

“Now that the master plan for Hampi is ready and we know the regulations and the land use, it is imperative to have a suitable design for the kind of houses/buildings to be built, street plan and infrastructure facilities that would not only be conducive to the world heritage site but would also help in the systematic development of the site. It would also protect the greenery and the cultural landscape in the vicinity, which is also part of the heritage,” she said.

Ms. Yang felt that the Government should lay more stress on adopting a proper urban plan for its social housing plan at the Hampi site.
