Arundhati Nag gets Rs. 21.6-lakh compensation
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Monday awarded a compensation of Rs. 21.6 lakh to Arundhati Nag, wife of Kannada film actor Shankar Nag, who died in a road accident in 1990. One of the Kannada film industry’s best known faces, Shankar Nag, who was born Shankar Nagarkatte in Mallapur village of Honnavar taluk (now) in Udupi district on November 9, 1954, died when the car in which he was travelling collided with another vehicle on National Highway No. 17 near Aragodu village in Davangere district on September 30, 1990.
He was on his way to participate in the shooting of film Jokumaraswamy, for which he was the producer, with his wife Arundhati and daughter Kavya when the accident occurred. While Shankar died, Arundhati and Kavya were injured.
Arundhati and Kavya had filed a claim petition before the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal (MACT), Bangalore, seeking compensation for Shankar Nag’s death and also for the injuries suffered by them. The MACT had awarded them a compensation of Rs. 25 lakh.
They had then approached the Karnataka High Court against the MACT order and sought enhanced compensation of Rs. 1.25 crore. A Division Bench comprising Justice K. Sreedhar Rao and Justice Satyanarayana reduced the compensation amount from Rs. 25 lakh to Rs. 21.6 lakh.
