BHUBANESWAR: Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) here on Monday said Union government should adopt a rational approach in announcing bailout packages for industrial sectors in the wake of global meltdown. Addressing a press conference here, CITU President M. K. Pandhe said benefits of bailout packages had not always percolated down to workers. He pointed out government should not be in an illusion that working class would remain unaffected in recession while only industries would be hit. In many cases economic packages were adding to the profitability of many industries whereas job cuts were going on unabated, CITU leader said. “Bailout packages should be given to those industries which will promise that they will not resort to job cuts,” he said. The veteran trade union expressed concern over largescale job cuts. “More than four lakh to five lakh workers have already lost their jobs in textile, diamond processing and leather industries. The job loss would become more critical in 2009-2010 when countries who were depending on India for different goods would stop importing in order to protect their own market,” Mr. Pandhe said. When there were apprehensions that working class would be hit badly, Union Labour Minister had not convened a meeting to assess the situation, he charged saying it showed the lackadaisical approach. All trade unions would hold demonstration in front of Parliament demanding protection of interest of working class in the month of February while CITU would alone go for State-level agitations on January 20, Mr. Pandhe said. Wage agreementEncouraged by the proposed five year wage agreement for labourers working in coal sector, CITU President said a meeting of all trade unions had been convened on January 18 to achieve similar settlement in all public sector units. “The wage agreement was not possible due to government’s insistence to sign 10-yearly wage settlement agreement. Mr. Pandhe said the agreement would be signed before January 26 .
