Noise pollution has become the biggest concern of the residents of Ramanathapuram town. Besides the Loud speaker menace, drivers of tanker lorries use air horns indiscriminately, which are loud and harsh. The decibel level of those horns is so high that it will impair one’s hearing ability. Senior citizens and students are the worst affected. G. Nagasamy, Ramanthapuram. Do not dump wasteThe Paramakudi municipality has started dumping waste in Santhaipettai. They often burn it which creates black smokes. Residents are affected a lot. V. Rajendran, Paramakudi. Lifespan of vehiclesSpeaking at Sivaganga, the Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram said that the Government should fix a lifespan of 10 or 15 years for vehicles especially those used for public transport and movement of goods, to reduce fuel wastage and minimising road accidents. This would increase the demand for new vehicles, which would, in turn, give a boost to the automobile industry and to the nation’s economy. The money being spent by the government to foot the increased fuel bill for operating old vehicles and pay compensation to the families of accident victims could be utilised to purchase new vehicles. G.K.S. Kandasubramanian, Sivaganga. Total prohibition neededIf total prohibition is introduced in Tamil Nadu, it will pave way for large scale illicit distillation in villages as well as regular flow of liquor from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. Alcohol addicts will not hesitate to pay any price to obtain drinks from any place. Further it is not possible to prevent alcohol addicts to cross border of neighbouring states to consume liquor at convenient intervals. Unless total prohibition was introduced throughout India, the goal of introduction of total prohibition only in a particular state cannot be achieved. V. Govindarajalu, Sivaganga. Extend platform coverThe first platform at Ramanathapuram Railway Station is partly provided with shelter and the remaining without any cover to protect passengers from rain or sun. So, there is extreme rush of passengers as well as persons who come to see off or welcome passengers are standing as a big crowd for the sake of shelter. Antisocial elements find it easy to pick pockets at one place. I appeal to the Southern Railway to extend the cover of the first platform to its full length. Asmabagh Anvardeen, Ramanathapuram.
